Energy security - the result of SDG implementation in the IUS curricula
An increasing number of universities around the world have been focusing recently on sustainability issues or sustainable development goals (SDGs) in their curricula. We can freely say that the International University of Sarajevo (IUS) has followed this trend with great enthusiasm. Namely, for several years SDGs have been systematically introduced to the curricula and teaching process.
Assist. Prof. Dr. Aliaksandr Novikau, Head of the IUS Department of International Relations and Public Administration, is one of the bearers of an innovative approach to the application of the SDGs in the IUS curricula. Through the Energy Security course, Dr. Novikau contributed to the delivery of the SDG 7 (Ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all), and SDG 4 (Quality Education). Assist. Prof. Dr. Novikau generously shared his rich experience and knowledge to equip his students with the knowledge and competencies in this field. Energy security is a very complex, but contemporary and necessary topic of today’s world.
The aim of the course is to explain to students of international relations why energy security is such a significant challenge for both developed and developing countries, as well as to explain to them what opportunities are available to some countries along with the limitations in obtaining energy resources. The course, also, examines how developing countries, with and without natural resources, have been struggling for many years with research in this field to achieve energy security. The course covers areas of politics, environmental protection, development, economics, and energy. The course aim is to equip students with the ability to identify, analyze and contribute to the SDGs delivery, and apply the acquired competencies to the development of specific policies and projects in their private and professional lives.
The management of IUS continuously emphasizes the fact that sustainable development cannot be achieved only by technological or environmental solutions, policy regulations, or financial instruments. In this regard, they say, it is necessary to radically change the way we think and act. Such change inevitably requires quality education and advanced learning for sustainable development at all levels and in all social contexts. Modern and adequate education of young generations, development of behavior, skills, and knowledge - is its starting point.
