IUS Hosts Seminar on European Energy Security and Sustainable Energy Transition

On Thursday, May 22, 2025, the International University of Sarajevo (IUS) hosted a seminar as part of the Jean Monnet project “European Energy Security.” This seminar was officially recognized by the European Sustainable Energy Week Secretariat as a European Sustainable Energy Days event, highlighting its alignment with broader European initiatives for sustainable energy.

Ms. Chiara Bocci from the Delegation of the European Union to Bosnia and Herzegovina delivered the opening remarks. Afterward, she and Ms. Dijana Dedić, also from the Delegation of the European Union, addressed questions from the audience, discussing the EU’s efforts in sustainable energy transition in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Following these discussions, civil society representatives shared their perspectives on current issues in the green energy transition within the country. Ms. Emina Veljović, a former IUS student and currently Executive Director of the Aarhus Center in Bosnia and Herzegovina, discussed public participation in the energy infrastructure decision-making process in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is worth noting that Ms. Veljović recently co-authored an article titled “Big trouble with small hydro: Why renewable energy policies in Bosnia and Herzegovina have been revamped” with professors Novikau and Krupalija, which was published in the International Journal of Energy Sector Management.

Mr. Zoran Poljašević, representing the environmental associations “Ozrenski Studenac” and “Gostilj Ozren,” addressed concerns regarding critical mineral mining in the country.

Associate Professor Dr. Aliaksandr Novikau from the IUS Political Science and International Relations (PSIR) study program moderated the seminar.

The seminar drew a varied audience, including IUS professors, students, media representatives, and civil servants.
