Project Led by IUS Professor Hamza Preljević Published by Renowned Global Publisher Palgrave Macmillan
The renowned global publisher Palgrave Macmillan, part of the international publishing network Springer Nature, officially released the book "Shifting Paradigms: Three Decades after the Signing of the Dayton Peace Agreement" on its web platform on August 30, 2025, with Assist. Prof. Dr. Hamza Preljević from the International University of Sarajevo (IUS) serving as the main coordinator and lead editor of the project. The publication marks a significant scholarly contribution to the understanding of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s complex post-Dayton political and social landscape. The project is particularly significant as it coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Dayton Peace Agreement, a milestone moment in the country’s post-conflict history. The printed edition of the book is expected to be available by the end of the month.
The book emerges from the research project "Bosnia and Herzegovina Thirty Years After the Dayton Peace Agreement," registered with the International University of Sarajevo (IUS), for which Professor Hamza Preljević served as the principal coordinator. It brings together a diverse group of local and international researchers and scholars to examine Bosnia and Herzegovina’s post-Dayton trajectory through a comprehensive and critical lens, exploring issues such as transitional justice, nationalism, collective memory, cultural identity, civil society and regional geopolitical shifts. Special attention is also given to contemporary challenges - including the refugee crisis, secessionist tendencies, the militarization of the region, and the roles of the European Union and NATO.
Professor Preljević, who initiated and led the project, expressed that compiling the volume was both a demanding and rewarding process. “What began as an exploration of pressing post-Dayton issues evolved into a dynamic intellectual exchange,” he noted. “I am grateful to all the contributing authors and colleagues who dedicated their time and insight to this collaborative effort.”
He adds that drafting the project proposal required a high level of precision and seriousness, given that it involved collaboration with the internationally recognized publisher Palgrave Macmillan. Nevertheless, he stresses that such success is not unattainable. “This is also a message to other researchers from Bosnia and Herzegovina – it is worth striving to work with reputable publishers because success is possible when there is a clear vision and commitment.” According to him, the fact that the book has been published by one of the world’s most respected publishers ensures that its messages will reach a broader international audience, which was the ultimate goal of the project.
The editorial board, led by Assist. Prof. Dr. Hamza Preljević, includes Prof. Dr. Muhidin Mulalić, Prof. Dr. Emir Hadžikadunić, and Assist. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Krupalija, who joined the project at Professor Preljević's invitation, after he had prepared the conceptual framework and the guidelines for the research project.
The volume features contributions from a distinguished list of scholars: Roberto Belloni, Aleksandra Zdeb, Tajma Kapic, Ena Kazić, Hikmet Karčić, Mustafa Dedović, Jasmin Hasanović, Damir Kapidžić, Maja Sahadžić, Lejla Balić, Faris Kočan, Ana Bojinović Fenko, Jure Pozgan, Sead Turčalo, Mirza Ljubović, Haris Gekić, Nidžara Ahmetašević, Gorana Mlinarević, Jahja Muhasilović, Nedžma Džananović, Agata Domachowska, Jasmin Ahić, Kenan Hodžić, Chiara Milan, and Aida Kapetanović.
Professor Preljević emphasizes that the book's authors responded to his invitation voluntarily, in the full spirit of marking the 30th anniversary of the Dayton Peace Agreement. Their participation, he notes, demonstrates a genuine commitment to Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially considering that the book was written during a period when the country was facing its most serious crisis since the signing of the peace agreement and the end of the war.
Institutional support was equally vital, Professor Preljević emphasizes. He extends his gratitude to the International University of Sarajevo for its continued support. He also expresses sincere appreciation to the Parliamentary Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Mr. Denis Zvizdić for their financial support of this project in the amount of 5,000.00 BAM (Decision No. 02/e-02-3-2003/24 of 11.10.2024), which was crucial both for guiding the project’s direction and for enabling the wider dissemination of its results.
Additional support for the project was provided by Mr. Nezim Alagić, Deputy Speaker of the House of Peoples of FBiH, in the amount of 2,000.00 BAM, pursuant to Decision No. 02/a-11-1228/25 of 28.08.2025. This contribution increased the budget for the procurement of this important book, which will be distributed to relevant institutions and individuals of significance.
"Shifting Paradigms" is now available through Palgrave Macmillan’s global distribution platforms.
